The recent publication in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science presents findings that challenge the commonly held belief of deep divisions between Republican and Democratic voters. The authors found that the differences between these groups are significantly overstated, and that they actually share many core values.

The researchers aimed to mitigate societal conflict and pessimism by encouraging journalists and social scientists to highlight the substantial similarities in fundamental values between Democrats and Republicans. Media discussions centered around the growing divide between these voter groups have led to widespread concern among the electorate, with eight out of ten voters from both parties worried about this perceived division, especially as the US election approaches.

As such, this perceived polarization has harmful effects, leading individuals to avoid interactions with those from the opposing group and fostering pessimism about societal cooperation and compromise. However, when participants in the study were presented with evidence of shared values, their outlook on the future became more hopeful, and they developed greater trust in those they previously saw as fundamentally different.

The study surveyed 2,529 US individuals, evenly split between Democratic and Republican voters, regarding their fundamental values. Results showed a 90% agreement on the importance of values such as helping others and feeling safe, with only about 5% of extreme voters on either side showing differing values.

Participants who viewed overlapping distribution graphs, which clearly depicted the substantial overlap in values between the two groups, felt more optimistic about the future of US society. This sense of hope arose from recognizing a deeper connection with voters from the opposing political group.

Reactions to these overlapping distribution graphs were more positive compared to bar plots or no information. Participants expressed greater positivity about the future when presented with graphs emphasizing similarities rather than divisions.

The study urges media and social scientists to incorporate descriptions of similarities alongside differences. The authors advocated for the use of graphs like overlapping distributions, which more accurately represent both similarities and differences, thereby helping to correct the misperceptions of deep societal division.

The results of the study highlights the actual unity in a country and that both parties want similar things. Instead of approaching discussions with hatred, fear, and the goal of getting someone to agree with your agendas, it is better to share commonalities and be open minded about how we can all achieve our objectives in a civil and kind manner.
