A study out of India of men with alcohol dependence found that 67% also suffer from sexual dysfunction, with the most common issue being a loss or lack of sexual desire, followed by erectile dysfunction.

Alcohol dependence syndrome, or alcohol use disorder, is marked by an inability to control or stop drinking despite harmful consequences. Those with this disorder have a strong craving for alcohol, increased tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. It disrupts daily life, affecting relationships, work, and health, and can lead to severe physical problems like liver disease, cardiovascular issues, and neurological damage.

The connection between alcohol use and sexual function is complex. While some studies suggest alcohol can boost sexual desire, long-term heavy drinking is often linked to sexual dysfunction. Many studies indicate that men with sexual dysfunction are often chronically dependent on alcohol.

The study included 170 male patients with alcohol dependence. The average age was 36 years, with about 50% having only primary education and 35% secondary education. Over 85% were employed, and all were married. The participants completed assessments of alcohol dependence (Alcohol Dependence Scale) and sexual function (Arizona Sexual Experience Scale and Sexual Dysfunction Checklist).

The results showed that 67% had been dependent on alcohol for 6-10 years, and 21% for over 10 years. Additionally, 67% of participants had sexual dysfunction, with the most common being a loss or lack of sexual desire (45.88%), followed by erectile dysfunction (around 40%), and premature ejaculation (31.76%).

Furthermore, 35% of participants were dissatisfied with the frequency of sex, 23% with their own sexual function, and 10% with their sexual relationship. The severity of alcohol dependence did not correlate with the type of sexual dysfunction.

While the study does not explore whether alcohol is the cause or result of sexual dysfunction, multiple studies in the past have highlighted the negative effects of alcohol on sexual function of men including decreasing testosterone levels, erectile dysfunction, and decreased libido.
