Smoking marijuana is bad for you, despite what cannabis advocates claim…probably because they’re all high.
With more marijuana legalization and users on the rise, society has to take the time to decide whether or not continuing this course of action is of an intelligent one.
Published in BMJ Open Respiratory Research, results from researchers in Canada provide evidence that marijuana legalization and use is indeed a terrible idea from a public health prospective.
For their study, researchers linked national health survey and health records for over 35,000 individuals from Ontario between the ages of 12 to 65 years old from 2009 through 2015.
Taking into account of multiple factors, cannabis users within the 12 months were matched upwards of three people who did not use or last use over 12 months ago. Emergency room visits and hospital admission for any reason were assess up to 12 months after date of cannabis use.
While the odds of death from any cause did not differ from cannabis user to non cannabis users, cannabis users with a 22% greater odds of emergency room visit or hospital admission for any cause. In addition, acute trauma was the major cause of such visits at 15% and respiratory issues was second at 14%.
“Further research is needed to confirm our findings, but our results suggest that cannabis use is associated with increased risk for serious adverse health events, and therefore, its recreational consumption in the general population should be discouraged,” the authors wrote.
Cannabis advocates are too high to make opinions about the safety of marijuana. The evidence provided in this study foreshadows the increase public health problems we society continues down this road to allow marijuana to be used recreationally. Just don’t smoke it. You shouldn’t be smoking anything that is combusted anyways.
