Do you exercise daily to the best of your abilities? From the amount of studies that show the benefits of exercise, if you’re not doing it, then it’s probably a strong indication that you’re an idiot. So here’s another one from BMJ Heart that helped identify how much exercise people in their later years.
While many studies look at exercise effects on younger age into older, few have looked into how exercise benefits people who are already in their later life.
Researchers from University of Padua in Italy, using data from Progetto Veneto Anziani (ProVA), a study of almost 3100 Italians ages 65 or older. found that just 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day was best at lowering major cardiac disease and death.
Compared to men with low physical activity level (<20 minutes per day) through follow up, men who had stable active physical activity or increased their physical activity had a 52% lower risk of experiencing cardiovascular disease. However, the study show that the benefits most achieved if people started these exercise habit at age of 70 years old rather than waiting to 75 or 80, where no benefits were shown. For you, the reader, now is always a good time though.
Vigorous activity included going to the gym, gardening, biking, swimming, dancing, etc.
“At least 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day should be recommended to achieve the greatest cardiovascular benefits,” state the authors.
However, it recommend people put up to 30 to 40 minutes per day as those who did had a decreased risk of developing heart failure.
Not kidding, the benefits of exercise cannot be overstated and if you’re not putting in 30 minutes of exercise daily, at least for the most part of the week, your stupidity cannot be overstated either. Be a man. Go exercise. Do what you need to do to prevent developing heart disease and live a better quality of life into your older years.
